Breechblock – Knit Colourwork Pattern

Breechblock is a stranded colourwork pattern inspired by 19th century helmets.

Breechblock applied to the ‘Ivy League Vest‘ by Eunny Jang

Breechblock is a stranded knit colourwork pattern inspired by 19th century spiked soldiers helmets. As I was told, soldiers would use the pointed peaks of their helmets to damage their guns when they were captured by the enemy, making the guns useless to enemies and unable to be used against the allied forces. These helmets in the New Zealand National Army Museum in Waiouru were a direct inspiration for the Breechblock print, and this is where I was told the story as well. The sharp and rounded shapes as well as Greek Crosses gleaned from a nurses uniform and the concepts of healing/pacifism feature in the design.

The Pattern

Breechblock is a tessellating stranded colourwork pattern of 16 by 32 stitches. The image to the right repeats across a pattern for a continuous design.
